This month looks a lot like last month. Green and pink. Teal green, the ‘Martha’ vintage color. Blue and white is used in a very contemporary way with natural woods and fibers.
Color Trends for May ‘09
Teal is the big color. Followed by the many shades of green and pink once again. There is also a little bit of orange here and there to give a little punch. The neutrals are back like the beginning of the year. Add the colors above. Use fresh cut flowers to add bursts of color.

Green is finally here. It is everywhere. It is bright grass green to the usual apple green. It is fresh and bright and a welcome sight after the winter months. Green is paint colors and on fabrics. Pink is no longer the dominate color. Yellow is trying to make its presence. Not a whole lot of it. And finally purple. This color is suppose to the IT color of the season. It is showing up in very small doses.
Color Trends for March ‘09
I would expect in March for the colors to start changing to the spring colors. Pastel and bright Easter egg colors. It is not quite happening yet. I think because of the economy the bright Spring colors are a little slow to come out. Interiors are still neutral and comfortable. Natural elements are continuing to warm up environments. Real wood grained pieces of furniture. Faux bois furniture and wall coverings with tree motifs keep modern rooms from becoming too stale and cold.
Monochromatic palettes are also present. Grey interiors that, amazingly enough, do not look dark and dismal but soothing and contemporary. Not sure if this is an attempt on the magazines to show that they are aware of the economic situation. Too much color may show an insensitivity to the shrinking bank accounts of the consumer. A little bit of a psychological game.
It is not all dreary out there. There is color. Yes, pink, pink, pink. It is changing in to a nice dark luscious color. Lighten the pink and add it to a punchy light green. It is a great combo. And here comes the yellow. It is trying. It is always a little hit and miss with this one. Sometimes a magazine or company will jump on this color only for it to disappear for the rest of the year. Remember the goldish yellow from the beginning of last year?
Color Trends for February ‘09
I think the beginning of the year we all crave a calm environment after the excitement of the holidays (and the presidential elections). The colors for the new year reflect that. Nothing to jar the senses. Natural, neutral backgrounds. That is where the green and brown color combination works well. While there are many different hues of green right now, the most popular seems to be the light sage green. This is the accent color to the browns.
Two other combinations are pink and green and the classic blue and white. The timid colors of last month are slightly bolder for February. Pink is all around. Some of that is due to Valentine’s Day of course. The light pink and the turquoise blue have darkened. Also, white is still present.
Color Trends for January ‘09
When we think of spaces that evoke a since of simplicity and ease, do you think of white? White is the first color of the year. It is in home furnishings and fabrics. Added to that is black accents. Shiny and bold. Understated and classic. Keep things warm with natural woods. Last year we started to see a lot more dark woods. In January things are lightening up. Mid range tones. Darker than birch, lighter than walnut.
The beginning of the year is also bringing in a nice soft pink. It is on the walls and home accessories. And once again, the robin’s egg blue is still hanging around. It looks like it is getting a little darker. It is mostly used as a wall color or I advertising as a background color.
